To defragment and optimize your data drives in Windows, use the built-in Defragment and Optimize Drives utility.
How to Run the Tool
1. Click the Windows Start button or search bar, type defrag, and select Defragment and Optimize Drives.
2. Choose the drive you want to check from the list.
3. Click Analyze (for a Hard Disk Drive or HDD) to see if the drive needs defragmenting, or click Optimize to start the process.
HDD vs. SSD Differences
• Hard Disk Drives (HDDs): Files break up into small pieces over time. Defragmentation reorganizes these scattered pieces into a single, continuous space so the mechanical read head moves less.
• Solid-State Drives (SSDs): Do not defragment an SSD. SSDs use flash memory with no moving parts. Instead, the tool runs a TRIM command, which tells the drive which data blocks are no longer needed so it can clean them up.
Thats it!
